Working with PDFs without uploading them
PDF is the format documents end up in when they need to look the same everywhere, which is why it carries so much of what matters: contracts, statements, medical results, filings, applications, and identity documents. It is also the format with the largest gap between what people need to do to a file and what the format lets them do easily, which is why an entire industry of online converters exists.
Those converters work by upload. You hand over the document, a server does the work, and you download the result. For a restaurant menu that is fine. For a bank statement, a payslip, or a signed agreement it is a decision most people make without pausing on it — and it is unnecessary, because a modern browser can do the same work locally.
Every tool here uses pdf-lib for document manipulation and PDF.js for rendering and text extraction, both running in your tab. Page operations like merging, splitting, rotating, and reordering are lossless: pages are copied as objects rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images keep their original compression. Conversions to other formats build genuine Office files — real .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx packages, zipped in the browser — rather than renamed text files.
Which tool do you need?
The most common confusion is between tools that look similar. PDF to JPG photographs whole pages; Extract PDF images pulls out the pictures embedded inside them at their original resolution. Compress PDF shrinks a file by turning pages into images, which costs you the text layer; Split PDF reduces size losslessly by giving you fewer pages. Organize PDF covers reordering and deleting pages, which is usually what people want when they reach for split and merge together.
One limitation applies across several tools and catches people out: a scanned PDF has no text layer. It is a photograph of a page. PDF to Text, PDF to Word, PDF to Excel, and PDF to CSV all read that layer, so on a scan they return nothing. The quick test is to try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer — if you cannot, the file is an image and you need optical character recognition rather than extraction.
