How to convert Scan to PDF

About Scan to PDF

Most scanner apps are a camera, a crop, and a PDF writer wrapped around an account and, very often, a cloud upload you did not ask for. The three useful parts do not need any of that. A browser can open the camera, take a frame, and write a PDF, and it can do all three without the pages leaving the tab.

That matters more for scanning than for almost any other job here, because of what gets scanned. Nobody photographs a novel page by page. People scan the form that has to go back signed, the letter from the hospital, the utility bill a landlord wants, the receipts for an expense claim, the passport page a visa portal demands. Those are the pages, and a scanner app that quietly syncs them to a server is doing exactly the thing you would not choose if it asked.

Here, the camera stream is a local MediaStream inside this page. Each photo you take becomes an image in memory, and the PDF is assembled from those images with pdf-lib, on your device. Nothing from the camera is transmitted, and the same Network-panel check that works for any file on this site works for the camera: open developer tools, scan a page, and watch nothing leave.

The result is a PDF of page images, fitted to A4 or Letter with a small margin, in the order you took them. It is not text-searchable, because a photograph has no text layer — if you need to search or copy from the scan afterwards, send it through OCR a PDF next, which recognises the words on your device too and hands back a searchable version that looks identical. That two-step is offered on the result screen.

Does the camera stream go anywhere?

No. It is a local stream inside this tab, the same way a video call preview is local before you join. Frames become images in memory and are never transmitted. You can confirm it in the Network panel.

Can I scan several pages into one PDF?

Yes. Take one photo per page — the camera stays open between shots — then press Done and build. Pages go in the order you took them, and you can drag to reorder before building.

Will the PDF be searchable?

Not on its own, because a photo has no text layer. Send the result through OCR a PDF next, which recognises the text on your device and returns a searchable copy that looks identical.

Which camera does it use on a phone?

The rear camera by default, which is the one you want for pages. There is a switch button if you need the front one.

Why does it ask for camera permission?

Because the browser requires it before any page can open a camera. The permission is for this tab and this site. The stream still never leaves the device.

Can I use photos I already took instead?

Yes. Drop them in or pick them from your device exactly as on Image to PDF. The camera is an extra way in, not the only one.
